HAWA MAHAL

jaipur

hawa mahal

It was in the year 1799 that Maharaja Sa
wai Pratap Singh built this royal structure as a continuation to the city palace. The Maharaja was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, which can be seen in the architecture of Hawa Mahal resembling Lord Krishna's crown.

Hawa Mahal (English translation: "The Palace of Winds" or "The Palace of Breeze") is a palace in Jaipur, India. Made with the red and pink sandstone, the palace sits on the edge of the City Palace, Jaipur, and extends to the Zenana, or women's chambers.

Hawa Mahal is known so because it unique five-storey exterior is akin to the honeycomb of a beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas through which the breeze flows in and keeps the palace cool.
